Catch Wrestling…

Catch Wrestling or Catch as Catch Can is a form of martial arts formed in Great Britian but the history of Catch Wrestling can be traced back toPankration – according to Billy Robinson. Pankration – was a martial art introduced into the Greek Olympic Games in 648 BC and founded as a blend of boxing and wrestling but without any rules. The term comes from the Greek παγκράτιον [paŋkrátion], literally meaning “all powers” from πᾶν (pan-) “all” + κράτος (kratos) “strength, power”. Spartan soldiers were taught to use this ancient boxing technique with the sole purpose of fighting and killing on the battlefield. For that reason, Spartans were not allowed to participate in any boxing competition including other Greeks.  Modern mixed martial arts competitions have come to feature many of the same methods that were used in pankration competitions in the ancient Greek world.

The origins of  hand-to-hand combat are almost impossible to trace; probably stemming to the first community of people – since fighting is human nature. Jiu Jitsu is a fantastic martial art and an essential part of mixed martial arts (mma), but the Gracies are not the first to do a rear-naked choke or a triangle. “There is nothing new under the sun” ( Ecclesiastes 1:9 ). Catch Wrestling has many ascpects of jiu jitsu.

Catch Wrestling

Jiu Jitsu has aspects of Catch Wrestling, Judo has similarities with both. Both have similarities with Judo. Basically all martial arts have one thing in common – using your entire body to defeat another opponent. Because people tend to be biased to their own martial art form it is hard for some to accept the teachings of other martial arts – because of style rivalry.

Anyone who wants to be the best MMA fighter cannot train only jiu jitsu, the September 10th Strikeforce fights made this quite evident, where Jacare and Roger Gracie both went down in defeat. Josh Barnett, a No-Gi jiu jitsu world champion, defeated Karhitonov with a takedown to the mount leading to the head and arm choke. Josh Barnett is a supportor and practicioner of Catch Wrestling.

To be a great Mixed Martial Artist / mma it would be wise to consider learning what Catch Wrestling has to offer. Jiu Jitsu has time and time again proven to be the best ground martial art in grappling competition but in the realm of Mixed Martial Arts / mma, wrestling and Catch Wrestling are becoming ever more dominant.
